RTM vs Stick-Built: What’s the Difference?
When it comes to building a new home, one of the first questions many people ask is whether to build on site or choose a Ready-to-Move (RTM) home. While both options result in a beautiful, high-quality home, how they get there is very different — and for many homeowners across Saskatchewan, the RTM route just makes more sense.
What Is an RTM Home?
An RTM home is a Ready-to-Move home — fully constructed at Prairie Castle’s building compound, then carefully transported to your property and placed on a permanent foundation.
RTMs are built outdoors, just like site-built homes, following the same National Building Code standards and inspected for safety and quality throughout construction. The difference is that your home is built in one location by a single, coordinated team, and then delivered in one piece — ready to move in once connected to utilities.
What Is a Stick-Built Home?
A stick-built home — also called a site-built home — is constructed piece by piece, directly on the property where it will stand. The term “stick-built” comes from traditional framing methods using wood studs, or “sticks.”
With this approach, all trades (framers, plumbers, electricians, drywallers, etc.) travel to the job site and complete their work there. This method is common in cities or subdivisions where trades are nearby and the build site is easy to access.
However, when your property is outside a major centre, finding trades who are available — or willing to travel — can become challenging and expensive.
Perfect for Rural, Lake, and Acreage Builds
RTM homes are ideal for anyone building a cabin, cottage, or home in a rural community — especially when trades are hard to find or far from major centres. Instead of relying on local contractors with varying experience or availability, Prairie Castle builds every home right at our compound with the same skilled tradespeople we work with every day.
Our team follows consistent systems and stringent quality standards, refined through years of experience and repetition. Because our trades build similar layouts regularly, they’ve become highly efficient — reducing errors, improving quality, and keeping costs predictable and affordable.
Best of all, you deal with one company from start to finish, including the delivery of your new RTM home. It’s a smoother, more reliable process that takes the stress and uncertainty out of building in remote or rural locations.
Why Prairie Castle Builds RTMs
After years of experience, we chose to focus solely on RTM homes because they make the most sense for our customers. Built outdoors in our secure compound, each home is crafted with care, delivered safely, and ready to move in the day it arrives — saving time, money, and stress without compromising quality.
