RTM vs Prefab Homes: What’s the Difference?
If you’ve been researching new home builds or cottages in Saskatchewan, you’ve probably come across terms like RTM, modular, and prefab homes. They’re often used interchangeably — but they’re not the same thing.
At Prairie Castle Developments, we build Ready-to-Move (RTM) homes, not prefab or modular homes. And while all three share the idea of building off-site, the process, materials, and finished results can be very different.
What Is an RTM Home?
A Ready-to-Move home is built as one complete structure — inside and out — at our Prairie Castle compound near Saskatoon. Once finished, it’s safely transported to your property and placed on a permanent foundation.
Like prefab homes, RTMs are built off-site, but there’s a big difference: your RTM home arrives complete and ready to move in, not as a collection of parts to be assembled. Apart from final connections, plumbing, electrical, and finishing work is done before delivery.
What Is a Prefab Home?
“Prefab” is short for prefabricated, meaning parts of the home are built in a factory or off-site facility and later assembled on your property. Some prefab homes are built as modules, while others come as panelized wall systems that crews assemble on-site like a jigsaw puzzle.
Prefab homes can offer shorter build times and less material waste, but they also depend heavily on on-site assembly, local trades, and the quality standards of the manufacturer.
Prefab homes can vary widely — from budget-friendly prefab cottages to high-end modular designs — and so can the price and quality.
Why Many Homeowners Choose RTM Over Prefab
Many homeowners prefer RTM homes because everything is built by one team, in one place, from start to finish. Our skilled trades work at the same yard every day, following consistent systems and high standards — meaning you don’t have to coordinate multiple contractors or manage the build yourself. Unlike some prefab homes that are built lighter for easy shipping, Prairie Castle RTMs use full-sized lumber, premium materials, and meet the National Building Code of Canada, giving you a true, long-lasting home.
RTMs are also ideal for rural or lake properties where trades are limited or costly to bring in; we deliver your finished home, place it on your foundation, and after a few final connections, you’re ready to move in. And because prefab pricing often excludes shipping, assembly, or on-site finishing, RTMs offer far more predictable pricing — with delivery built right into your quote and no surprises along the way.
